Service Opportunities

The LBUSD Service Learning 40 hour graduation requirement has been dropped for students entering high school during the 2011-2012 year.  All other students must complete 40 hours of Service Learning/Community Service to fulfill the high school graduation requirement.

Dominguez Gap Wetlands

First-of-its-kind-in-this-county project are all practical–flood control, water quality and water conservation - it's J-Towns backyard! Besides the open space and native plants provide habitat for many animals, not to mention hiking and horse trails - sea turtles have even been seen there! To get to the wetlands, head west on San Antonio Drive past Long Beach Blvd and turn right on Del Mar Avenue.  Go to 4062 Del Mar and look for the gate on the left side of the street.  For Service Learning events, phone 626-458-5335.

Golden Shores Marine Biological Reserve

EVERY 3rd SATURDAY, by the Catalina Terminal on 101 Golden Shore Drive.  Help keep one of two Long Beach estuaries pollution-free  and earn Service Learning credit!  The estuary is a critical food source for migrating birds and is a nursery for coastal fish. Sponsored by the Port of Long Beach and the Friends of Los Cerritos Wetlands.  Ms. Rash in Room 1306 has more information and can provide directions. All equipment and snacks are provided!

Phat Habitat @ JFA

Phat Habitat @ JFA

Phat Habitat is a S.O.L.A.R. (Sustainable, Organic, Local, Agricultural Recreation) garden is located on the alley east of the JFA campus at 158 Forhan Street.  Students have been busy on Saturdays tending the Garden. Two new walkways have been built, wooden borders constructed and various other crops have been planted.  Alfalfa and soybeans plants add nitrates to enhance the soil. Edible perennial plants have been added in some areas.  Contact Mr. Sourbeer (x2234) in Rm. 1204 for dates.  We need your help!

30 Min Monthly Beach Clean-ups

Meet the 3rd Sat of the month at 10am at 1 S. Granada Ave at Ocean Blvd, Belmont Shore, to help rid the beach of trash and debris. Free parking.  You are welcome to show up by yourself or with your group.  Bags, gloves, snacks, drinks provided! DOOR PRIZES!
