What is JROTC?

Department of DefenseThe Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC)  is a very unique part of Jordan High School. It is a coeducational program designed to provide instruction which will benefit the cadet, the community, and the nation. The JROTC program had its beginning in 1916, when Military subjects were added to schools' curriculum. Today our unit is rated as an Honor Unit.

Basic objectives of the program are as follows:

  1. To develop each cadets leadership potential and ability to live and work cooperatively with others.
  2. To instill in each cadet ethical values and principles, integrity, responsibility and good citizenship skills.
  3. To develop the cadets ability to think logically and communicate effectively both orally and writing.

It is important to emphasize that students enrolled in JROTC do not incur any military obligation whatsoever. Military service after graduation is striclty voluntary and at the choosing of the individual.

History

JROTCDavid Starr Jordan High School was founded in the City of Long Beach in 1933. Not there is also a  D. S. Jordan High School in Los Angeles. The JROTC unit was stated in 1937, and has been active continously ever since.

Participation in the JROTC was mandatory in early years and then became an alternative to P.E. for all students. At present, JROTC is an elective for Juniors and Seniors and a alternative to the State mandatory P.E. program for the 9th and 10th grade students.

Benefits

All Cadets are issued a complete uniform consisting of a shirt, trousers, socks, shoes, belt and uniform accessories. Females will receive a blouse, slacks, socks, shoes, and uniform accessories.

Cadets who complete three years of JROTC at Jordan HS. have their additional benefits:

  1. Alternative to P.E. for 9th and 10th grade students.
  2. Entry into military service three pay grades above other soldiers enlisting without JROTC.

Eligibility

Students enrolled in the program must be mentally and physically fit and must be at least 14 years of age

How to Join

Each eighth grade student gets an enrollment card on which there is a place to indicate classes you want to take in ninth grade. On your card scratch out P.E. and put JROTC. Turn your card into your counselors when they visit your school.

Activities

Cadets participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities. These activites provide challenging and enjoyable opportunities for leadership development and personal service to the school and the community.

Rifle Team

We have a Rifle Range at Jordan HS. Members of the Rifle Team are given the opportunity to participate in small-bore rifle marksmanship. The Rifle Team competes in various rifle matches throughout the year.

Drill Teams

Jordan HS has both an unarmed and armed drill team. Both teams perform regulation and exhibition drill that develops both physical and mental ability of the cadet. The teams also compete against other schools in the district.

Color Guard

The Color Guard is another elite organization. During the year they present the colors at school and civic events, parades and Drill Meets.
