What is JROTC?
The Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) is a very unique part of Jordan High School. It is a coeducational program designed to provide instruction which will benefit the cadet, the community, and the nation. The JROTC program had its beginning in 1916, when Military subjects were added to schools' curriculum. Today our unit is rated as an Honor Unit.
Basic objectives of the program are as follows:
- To develop each cadets leadership potential and ability to live and work cooperatively with others.
- To instill in each cadet ethical values and principles, integrity, responsibility and good citizenship skills.
- To develop the cadets ability to think logically and communicate effectively both orally and writing.
It is important to emphasize that students enrolled in JROTC do not incur any military obligation whatsoever. Military service after graduation is striclty voluntary and at the choosing of the individual.
History
David Starr Jordan High School was founded in the City of Long Beach in 1933. Not there is also a D. S. Jordan High School in Los Angeles. The JROTC unit was stated in 1937, and has been active continously ever since.
Participation in the JROTC was mandatory in early years and then became an alternative to P.E. for all students. At present, JROTC is an elective for Juniors and Seniors and a alternative to the State mandatory P.E. program for the 9th and 10th grade students.
