Mission Statement

Special Education promotes the mission of the Long Beach Unified School District for students at risk, including those with disabilities. Our job is to ensure the educational success of all students by having high expectations, a commitment to excellence, and a comprehensive program, confirming the belief that all students can learn and become responsible, productive members of a competitive society.

“Our kids can!”

Curriculum

The curriculum for Special Education is standards based. Teachers are required to adhere to individual department demands and attend core department meetings. Modifications are made on an individual student basis using supplemental material and SDAIE strategies to lower the affective filter that impedes student progress. Emphasis on manipulatives, realia, visuals and oral instructions assist students in understanding grade level material.  MS students follow an alternative curriculum that focuses on independent living skills and community based instructions.
